Online Gaming – History and Today

Our life now is full of electronic systems where we need to learn about these technologies to be with the system. We have the online systems like e-marketing, e-pass, e-banking, E-communications and even e-gaming. On this, the focus of this article is the online game.

History of online games

Tracing the history of online gaming, it could be seen that it is a combined work of many different entities and companies. Online gaming started out as multiplayer games, eventually evolving to encompass online game servers and then into a massively multiplayer online gaming situation.

Multiplayer gaming dates back to 1972, when a joint Control Data Corporation and University of Illinois project called PLATO allowed college students to network with other terminals for computer-assisted learning and education. Thanks to the creativity of the students, they integrated games that started the world of multiplayer games.

Sometime in 1978, the Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) spawned a field of network-based games that allowed players on the network to explore and interact with the world of MUD games. This paves the way for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) with its shared world concept.
